'A Winter Love' Media Evaluation:

Here is my media evaluation to show that I have understood the process in which it took to produce three ancillary tasks that work well as a campaign. I did this in order ti analyse my work and show how aspects of my work were conventional to media products and also how I have developed some of them in order to benefit my campaign and add a sense of variety to my work.

Film Trailer Storyboard:

Here is the storyboard that clearly sets out and identifies the set scenes within my original film trailer. There is a total of 15 scenes drawn out including shot numbers, the type of shot it is, whether or not there is any camera movement involved as well as if there is any dialogue or sound throughout that clip. These clips are the main scenes however there will be extra bits filmed and put in in-between each main scene. A storyboard is helpful as it will give me the exact guideline I need to insure I don't miss any key features out of my original romantic drama trailer as well as keeping within the set time frame.

Film Poster Designs:

This is the film magazine poster design that features our new original feature film 'A Winters Love'. The film poster is a stereotypical poster for a romantic drama that follows all conventions of a film poster. This is a benefit for our film poster due to it catching the eyes of our 15-25 year old females target audience. The main image is aimed towards our chosen target audience in order to give an insight to the type of film it is promoting as well as giving viewers an image that they can enjoy that makes them want to watch the film due to it being within their interest and catching their attention.

Colour Scheme:
The background (although not shown in the drawn design above) is set at night but the surrounding lights brighten up the background. It gives the poster more of a romantic feel due to the dimmed atmosphere and street lights surrounding the couple. The couple are dressed in winter clothing due to the film being set in the winter therefore the clothing is deep and dark colours instead of bright, loud colours. The deep and dark colours throughout add to the winter feel of the film and really sets the scene.

Main Image:
The main image is set outside with the winter lights glowing in the background behind the couple where the women is looking passionately into the mans eyes. The image allows the audience to get a feel that 'A Winter Love' is a film from the romantic genre. The winter lights in the background give the photo more of a warming feel to it despite it being set outside and allows the characters to glow. The characters are wearing relatively dark clothing which allows the characters to glow and stand out from the dark but lit up background, it is a great contrast between the two.

Title, Tagline and Billing Block:
The title is centred in the middle of the poster this is conventional for a typical film poster as the main imagine draws in the most attention which is typically placed in the middle of the poster therefore it makes sense to locate the title where the most attraction will be drawn. The title is in a font that represents the romantic genre and will be coloured black in order to make it stand out amongst the coloured background of the characters. The tagline is located directly below the main title which is also conventional for a film poster, by having it located underneath the main title also allows more attention to be drawn towards it as when reading the title you will continue to read the writing below. The tagline is also black in order for it to stand out and is also in a different font to the rest of the writing on the poster. This makes the tagline easily identifiable for the audience as well as it being conventional. The billing block is located at the bottom of the page where it is on the majority of film posters this is conventional as well as the style and layout matching the guidelines of a billing block.

My final digital film poster:
The final digital film poster follows the aims and ideas I had within my drawn version. The scene is set outside at night with the outside lights brightening up the dark background as well as adding the romantic feel between the two characters which also corresponds to the romantic genre. The writing throughout the poster is all in white text this is so it stands out and is visually appealing as well as being noticeable. The image fades into darkness towards the top of the poster which leads towards the actors names giving it the feel of their names being stars. The majority of the writing is set in the centre of the poster which draws the most attention and brings the natural eye straight towards the main image also.

Film Magazine Designs:

This is the film magazine front cover design that features our new original feature film 'A Winters Love'. The film magazine follows all conventions of a stereotypical magazine therefore it will catch the attention of the audience who have an interest in film magazines as they know what they are looking for. The target audience is 15-25 year old females therefore the main images are aimed towards that target audience.

Colour Scheme:
The colour scheme throughout the magazine cover reflects the target audience through the use of bold, bright colours that catches the eye and makes the main image stand out. The background colour is a plain bold colour which is purple tone to reflect the targeted gender as well as reflecting the winter atmosphere which in turn relates back to the movie. The puff is a bright orange colour that stands out from the rest of the magazine due to it not having a relation to anything else on the cover - this is a typical convention of a puff.

Main Image:
The main image is a representation of the type of movie 'A Winter Love' is and the type of audience it is aimed towards. The image reflects the intimacy between the two characters and is positioned in the centre of the page taking up the majority of it. This makes it eye catching and makes it stand out. The clothing that the two people in the image are wearing are lighter toned colours that stand out more from the darker background.

Masthead, Skylines and Cover lines:
The magazine masthead follows the typical conventions of what a magazine title would do, it is positioned large and bold spreading the width of the magazine cover. It is positioned on top of the main image and is white. The reason for it being white is for it to be bright and stand out amongst the dark, cool toned background colour that runs throughout the background. The masthead of the movie, the skyline and cover lines are all done using the same bold font. This is to keep a running pattern throughout the poster that catches the eye and makes it easier for the audience to read. The cover lines are black as they stand out more in a dark colour against the light background of the characters, on the other hand the skyline and movie title are in white. The reason for this is white makes it stand out more against the coloured background it sits on and it also ties in nicely with the colour scheme of the movie magazine title. It runs a common pattern throughout.

My final digital film poster:
My final digital magazine front cover design follows the design of my original drawn idea however the colour schemes have changed slightly as the colours that I have now decided to use work better with the colour tones of the characters clothing compared to what I had originally planned. The writing throughout is all white in order for it to stand out, be visible and eye-catching. The main title and the skyline along the top of the magazine have a thick outer line of black which draws more attention due to them being the main titles within the front cover and makes then stand out more. The background colour is sky blue with a lighter blue framing the image throughout; this in turn makes the image stand out. The puff instead of a bright orange colour is a light shade of pink which stands out amongst the blue background as well as tying in with the white throughout. The characters facial expressions are dramatic and give an intimate feel to the audience which connects the to romantic genre.

Questionnaire and Analysis:

In order for me to create a romantic drama film that will appeal and be a success to a wide range of people I took the time to carry out a questionnaire which enabled me to ask specific questions that will help indicate what the audience really want to see. By knowing all of this information I can then come up with a plan to create a film that will be what the majority of the audience want and will have a part of them in it, they can connect and in turn it will create a successful film.

Questionnaire Results/Analysis:

Question 1:
The first question I set was – ‘What is your favourite part of a romantic drama movie?’. I chose this question in order to get a rough idea of what people would expect and want to see within a romance movie – what is the main stereotypical aspect that they look out for. The most popular answer that appeared from my questionnaire was the romance/love interest; I think this reflects through the target audience as it was aimed towards females aged 15-25 therefore stereotypically they all enjoy and have an interest of watching people fall in love. The results from this question will help with the development and design of my products also allowing me to know what will appeal to the majority of people. I now know to include some sort of love interest/romance within my film, movie poster and trailer.

Question 2:
The second question I set was – ‘What do you believe is the most important audio convention of a romantic drama movie?.  I chose this question to help me know what is more important soundtrack/background music or dialogue within a romantic drama so I could apply the preferences to my romantic drama. The most common answer was the soundtrack/background music is more important. I think the soundtrack/background music is more important as it can relate to the characters mood and also keep the audience interested because after a while constant dialogue can become repetitive and boring.

Question 3:
The next question I asked was – ‘What is the most eye-catching feature on a film magazine cover?’. I chose this question in order for me to base my own film magazine cover around the features that interest and catch the eyes of people the most. This will enable me to have a successful magazine and bring in publicity for my film itself. The results show that people find the colours of the magazine, the image and the magazine title the most eye catching. This is because these are the features that stand out the most and are the largest features on the cover itself – they take up the most room.

Question 4:
For question 4 I asked – ‘What is the best selling point on a movie poster that will make you want to see it’. This will enable me to have a successful movie poster and bring in publicity for my film itself. The results were ranked in order from most to least:
1st The image
2nd The title
3rd The actors in the movie
4th The colours
5th The narrative
I feel as if the image was chosen to be most important as it stands out the most and catches the audiences eye straight away due to it being large and centred. It can also gives an insight into what type of characters the film may include which will also interest people. The title of the film came in close second and I feel as if this was chosen because it has very similar features to the main image as its bold, bright and catches the eye straight after you see the main image.

Question 5:
‘Do you prefer a male or female lead role in a romantic drama movie and why?’ is the next question I asked within my questionnaire. This helps to know what interests the audience and what character I can consider as the lead role of my final film. The results show that most people prefer a male lead in a romance film because it helps the female audience to connect with the female characters emotions as they can relate as well as the male lead having and creating conflict with the girl which creates emotion and females of my primary audience enjoy these emotional romance films.

Question 6:
Question 6 asked – ‘What kind of colour schemes do you associate with the romantic drama genre?’. I asked this question to give an idea of the type of  colour scheme that would be appropriate to use for my movie poster and film magazine. The most liked colour scheme that relates to a romantic drama is bright, loud and vibrant colours, this colour theme was chosen because it gives off a happy vibe and reflects the romance between the two characters. I will now add bright, vibrant colours within my movie poster and film magazine to reflect the mood of my film and catch the audiences eye.

Question 7:
Following on from the colour scheme I went on to ask ‘Describe the idea of text style within the romantic genre?’. This is another question that will again help with the appearance of my movie poster and film magazine as well as catching the audiences attention. The results show that people associate a fancy, handwriting style of font for the text. This is because the font is delicate and pretty which reflects off the love/romance aspects of the film. I will be able to take on board these styles and interpret them into my movie poster and film magazine.

Question 8:
In order to generate ideas on what to include in the magazine article I asked the audience ‘What 3 things might a magazine article contain about a romantic drama?’. The answers included the characters themselves, the storyline and the love interest within the film. This will give the audience an insight to the film and get the audience interested before they even watch the film and draw attention towards it meaning people will want to go and watch the movie when its released.

Question 9:
Finally I asked ‘Do you prefer movie posters that set the scene with narrative backgrounds or plain backgrounds?’. This question was asked to find out the audiences views on what they like to see on a movie poster. The majority of results show that they prefer a plain background, this is because it enables the main image to stand out and catch the eye of the audience. It will bring more attention to itself and make people want to take more notice on what it is about. This will enable me to produce an eye catching poster that will keep the audience interesting and guessing about the movie itself.
